After this, the Democratic nominee for president accused Donald Trump of not being open about his own health records.
The vice president also said her Republican opponent “doesn’t want the American people to know if he is fit to be president.”
Trump’s team responded without releasing his medical records, quoting his doctor as saying he is in “perfect and excellent health.”
The Trump campaign said the Republican nominee has a “very busy and active campaign schedule” and claimed that Harris “does not have the stamina of President Trump.”
This exchange followed a medical report from the White House stating that Vice President Harris “has the physical and mental strength” needed to be president.
Dr. Joshua Simmons, an Army colonel who has been Harris’ doctor for over three years, said her most recent check-up in April was “normal” and noted that she leads a healthy and active lifestyle.
He also mentioned her family history of colon cancer and her allergies, stating she follows the recommended health check-ups, including colonoscopies and annual mammograms.
After the medical records were released, a Harris campaign spokesman posted on social media: “your turn, Donald Trump.”
Before a campaign event in North Carolina, Harris also questioned her rival’s mental sharpness and how he “goes off on tangents.”
Democrats have been criticizing 78-year-old Trump’s age and mental fitness after months of Republicans making similar attacks on President Joe Biden before he dropped out of the race. If Trump is elected again in November, he would finish his second term as the oldest president in US history at 82, a record he would share with Biden, who will also be 82 when he leaves office in January.
In response to pressure from Harris’ team, Trump’s campaign communications director, Steven Cheung, said Trump had “voluntarily released” updates from his personal doctor and the doctor who treated him after the assassination attempt this summer in Butler, Pennsylvania.
“All have concluded he is in perfect and excellent health to be Commander in Chief,” Cheung said.
He also mentioned a medical letter from November 2023 stating that Trump’s “physical exams were normal and his cognitive tests were exceptional.”
National polls show Harris slightly ahead of Trump, but the numbers in key states are very close.
